Using Propolis as a Protectant

Bees will naturally use propolis and wax to coat and protect the inside of their box. Propolis and wax usually protect the upper edge and frame rest of a box. Frame rest repair isn’t a viable option because wood putty introduces harsh chemicals, and metal wraps set frames higher than designed and introduce hiding spaces for small hive beetles.

Repairing Frames

Frames are essential for hive stability. Having good drawn comb in your frames is a beekeeper’s dream, and you’ll want to protect those combs. You can repair broken top bars on wooden frames (and even plastic frames) by using a frame saver to help reinforce frame corners. It’s often easier to replace broken bottom bars. A frame-cleaning tool makes cleaning wax from the grooves in wood frames go faster. (Not using one hardly seems worth cleaning the wax.) You can then tighten cross wires and install a fresh foundation.
